How do you do the quotes with the box around it? (If that makes sense.)

Debi, you use the forum code for quote. I've pasted
the example with an extra space between the opening
bracket "[" and the rest of the code. Try it out!

[ Quote=Username]Quoted Message With
Username[ /QUOTE]
[ Quote]Quoted Message[ /QUOTE]

shows up as:

Bill, thanks for helping Debi out. I've tried numerous times to properly show the code behind the quotes, but as you well know you can't do it without fudging the code or it will make the box. I tried un-checking the "Enable Forum Codes to format post", but it still formats anyhow. I did discover that you can type out the code without any quote between and it will not convert, as below:
[quote][/quote]

You can also try this technique to foil the formatting:
[quotë]Testing quote[/quote]

However, the best I've found so far is to use this approach:

Which will convert into this:

Quote:
Quoted Text Goes in Here

And this:

Which becomes:

Are you asking where? It gets typed into the same text area box you use. But I do have something else added to my post.

Thanks Bill & Jim. Sorry I didn't answer right away. I haven't had a chance to get my brain to attend to this, but appreciate it!!
So here goes a try. I had saved this quote from Jim when I was struggling awhile ago with the "do we choose God" question. This helped a lot.

Jim wrote:

if we ask why we believe while others don't and we come up with any other reason than the grace of God we'll only end up testifying to man.

And by following directions exactly, I correct that spacing problem

Good job, Debi!

P.S. Adam, Jim used images to show how to use the
quote codes since you can't type them in correctly and
show how it is done.

You could use the quote button on the post that you want to quote......

It will take you to a new page that has the Post reply form and the Quote will be complete ready for you to add your response.

If you have already written some response you will lose what you have written when you click on "Quote".  My favorite way around this is to right click on quote and select "Open in new tab".  This will open a new tab (if you are using IE8 or Firefox, Opera, etc that use multiple tabs) with a reply box with the quote inside.  This can be highlighted and "copied" then return to your post and "paste" it in wherever you want it in your reply.

You can use this method to make multiple quotes in your reply as well.

Hi Carl,

That is a cool trick you got there. I happened to see this post by Debi a week or two ago and only posted on it because I had always wondered how Jim and Bill were getting those nice little quote boxes so darn shortened! I had been using the regular quote tab which you pointed out for quite some time and was familiar with that but, as I said I liked the idea of getting it shortened up.

Hey I tried using the route you suggested but,,bummer it did not work for me.[I am using FF] Then again maybe the outcome is something familiar to me already. Who knows? Thanks for your suggestion! Keep em coming if you have more!

The thing that often happens when using the Quote tab and trying to shorten the quote at the same time is that one of the pieces of code get deleted in the process — usually a bracket "]" — and then it doesn't work. That's why I don't use the Quote feature to instruct on how to do it ... even though I constantly use that button myself.

Jim :)

I was a newbie not so long ago!  I have always been lazy and try not to manipulate code if I don't have to.   I get frustrated going the code route and messing up the syntax like Jim mentioned.  However I did appreciate the explanation of how to make the code work going that route.

Hey, all I have to do is to try out a new program or application and I'm a newbie all over again!

That's for sure, especially for those of us getting "up there" in years.

Thanks Carl, that worked. And welcome!

I think I know someone in Salina (actually we email & sometimes talk on the phone, I've never met her.) I'll have to ask her again, if that's where she lives to be sure; she has a son or son-in-law named Carl, and she works for the family business, maybe that's you??

Hmmm, could be.  My mother is Vivian.  She introduced me to the site here.  She gets around by E-mail but not so much on the forums yet.

Yes, Vivian is her name. (I didn't forget it, just didn't know if I should mention it.) I told her about the shovel site. Lynden from California introduced me to her.

Sound familiar?

He he he..well yes in fact quite well![I used to anyway]

Yeah as a matter of fact "Joe" another fellow on the forum over the years, he and I and a few others used to gather back in the late 90's in Lindens home[and sometimes Joe's] Yeah I eventually invited my younger cousin to it [our gathering]and he began going regularly and in fact still speaks to Linden to this very day.[he just brought him up to me last month in fact] Did you ever meet Kevin? Kevin was his best bud before he[Linden] was remarried.

Yeah I stumbled over here to/at the Shack about 10 years ago. I had a little older Macintosh computer I had set up on the floor of my shared apartment.[which I got for the purpose of meeting on the Shack basically] Back then I was simply known as "Adam" by my log in. Later it became "Luvin". After about I am guessing 2 or so years I bumped into Joe[who Jim has now met in person] and turned him on to the shack.  He [Joe] really became a great contributer over the years until he dissapeared into another country on us![were are ya Joe?!] Anyway he always was a good frined and buddy and Linden too for that matter. Geez I remember having Linden over to my folks house to let his kids swim in our pool while we talked and talked about God stuff.[the kids were practicing there diving skills]I can remember Joe towing my car on a couple of occasions![he had his own towing co.] Well that's way more than you wanted to hear..but, I was in the mood for memory lane. So there ya go.

Adam

Yes, that is interesting-small world Adam. I don't know any of those other people you mentioned.

Lynden used to have B.G. rallies back then I think.
He says he remembers you-you had lots of questions.

Lynden knows Carl's Mom, Vivian, from doing some teaching to a group in Kansas, that got together thru his wife, Chris; and Lynden put me in touch with Vivian. We met Lynden & Chris about a 1/12 yrs ago at their house. We only live a little over an hour away.

I remember you said you used to live in Roseville, right Adam? That's where we have to shop since we hardly have any big stores. But we love living rurally-away from some of the craziness and hustle and bustle. I hate driving drive down there, which I'm sure you can relate to, but then again crazy drivers are every where.

That's interesting? Don't remember any rallies? hmm. Yeah its funny that you said he said I had lot's of questions because he/we didn't have many answers! I recently reunited with my first Pastor[the guy who first spoke to me of Christ] after 20 plus years and one of the first things he mentioned about me to my wife was that I was very inquisitive and just like "a sponge". Me? Dunno. Just interesting I guess to hear others feedback I guess.

Yes Roseville..I still own a home there. It is VERY busy traffic. I am so glad I don't have that now. It almost sounds as if you might live out by Auburn or even Grass Valley then?

Yes, can relate to having many questions and not many answers. I remember trying to figure out, but what about obedience? That's religion for you.

Yep, live out there in the foothills.
