I had the privilege of reading most of Vinnie's posts and have to agree, he was very real and very inspiring, full of Life. I love his humor and honesty. Glad to see him pop in.

(sigh) No further Vinnie sightings?

And this seems as good a place as any to share my news (me being lazy): I am no longer in Iraq! I will drop another line when I am stateside.

Good Idea, Jim.

If he can't come to us, we can come to him. There are many posts of his I enjoyed. This is one of my favorites. The whole thread can be found here as there is quite a bit of other wonderful points brought out there:

http://shovelshack.net/forum_posts.asp?TID=598&KW=vinnie

It's kind of quiet here at the shack on this Thanksgiving weekend, So I guess I'll blabber away to myself.

I love Jim's Shoveletter series on "Shadows". It was some of the best reading that I have had on the subject. I didn't love it because it was what started me thinking about "shadows", but because it was a subject that I had been intrigued by for years. Here's a very abbreviated version of how my thoughts evolved over a period of time, after I first began to see the shadows.

I first grasped the basic concept of shadows through some stuff I read years ago. A "shadow" was "something that could not exist in and of itself, and there was no source for it in the universe. It is the absence of something real". The very basic and simple ones were easy to grasp, like: darkness is the absence of light. (There is nothing that produces darkness in the universe. So it's not a "thing"). Death is the absence of Life. Hate is the absence of love, Deafness the absence of hearing, Evil is the absence of good, etc etc....

It went on and on and those were the simple ones. I came up with some a little more complex, "time is the absence of the "eternal now", etc... By this point, it was very apparent to see that only the things of God, were the only real things in this world, and everything else was a shadow. The more that I could strip away the shadows, the more that I could see God more clearly. I became the Shadow Hunter!  If I could just expose all the evil shadows that were blocking my view of God, then I could see Him face-to face! I longed for that day.

My quest continued at that point for several years, and I began to see that my definition was more or less, "all created things are evil, and only spiritual things are good". It sounded kind of gnostic-like, but I continued to be a shadow-hater.

But after a period of time, I came to see this; The shadows were already "stripped away" 2000 years ago! "The Light of the world" didn't "strip away" the shadows, He fulfilled them! He fulfilled all things on that day, and brought all things to their fullness. Shadows are part of the "old", but now the "new" has come. "In Him is no darkness at all" and that pure light has enjoined Himself to me now, and since He and I are one, in me is no darkness at all.

So were the shadows bad? Should I be a shadow-hater?  All the shadows point to Christ. If I hate them, maybe I'm not seeing them through the fullness of Christ. We know that the law was a shadow that pointed to Christ, and it was fulfilled that day. We are not to see it as a bad thing but as a great thing that was brought to it's fulfillment by Christ. It pointed us to the fullness to come.

I've become to see the IC in the same way. I am in no way an IC-hater. I see how God is using the IC in a tremendous way (not always in their intended way, but in God's intended way) Almost all of our lives were impacted in many, many ways by the IC (God's use of it anyway). It was by finding out what was not right, that we were made aware what was right. Almost every truth that has been made known to my heart, was by bumping into the "lies" so many times, that the truth was made obvious to me. It is the awareness of the shadows that make us aware of the real thing.

I don't think it's only a few shadows that should be viewed through the fullness of Christ, but all shadows. Even those most hideous, tragic and devestating events in our lives. All the betrayals and evils that have befallen us. It was in the awareness of those wrong things that we became aware of the good things. It was by my imperfectness, that I became aware of His perfectness. It was my sin that allowed me to see his forgiveness. It was fear that made me aware of His peace. It was the darkness that made me aware of His Light. It was the lack of love that me aware of His Love. It was the lack of wealth that made me aware of His wealth, It was grief that made me aware of His Joy. Time is what made me aware of eternity etc, etc

It's in the shadows that He makes me aware of the Substance. The darker the shadow, the more aware I am of the Real, in my heart.  I had to become aware of my flesh, so that I might become aware of the Spirit. The shadows accentuate the substance! Even movie writers and storytellers have a mental knowledge of this. The more dastardly and hideous the villian is portrayed, the more that the goodness of the hero will be apparent. If there was no villian, or terrible tragic event, then the hero would have no visible distinction from the other characters. We would not be aware of his heroics. The villian, or tragic event gives definition to the qualities of the hero, and makes us aware of those qualities, and the more villainous, or the more tragic the event, the more clearly the hero is defined for us.

People who seem to have reached the deepest darkest quagmire of the consequences of sin in the world and bondage, are the ones who seem to have the most drastic and visible  born-again experiences, while those who may not have been as deeply mired in the consequences of bondage in this world of shadows, seem to have a more subtle born again experience, and the outward effects may not be visible at all (I'm talking of the emotional and observable reaction of a person as God makes him aware of His salvation, I'm speaking of the awareness process of our minds and hearts, and not implying that we were not all equally mired, equally blind and equally lost. Although the inward event was same for all, the outward, visible impact is more clearly seen in a person who was more visibly mired.  It's been my observation anyway) The emotional effects of a glass of water, are more observable in a man who has been in the desert for 30 days, than to one who has not been in the desert, even though the need for water is common to both. The deeper the awareness of a persons past  bondage, the deeper the awareness of their freedom. God makes us aware the shadows, so that we may be made aware of His realness.

Once again, I'm talking of the awareness process of our hearts in the shadow world that we observe with our fleshly eyes. The shadow world is an illusion that our outward senses experience. Our flesh lives in the "old", in a world of shadows that has passed away, and has been fulfilled by Christ,. but we are in the "new" where only the reality of Christ exists. He uses our awareness of the shadows to make our hearts aware of the reality.

None of this is a statement of fact by me, or what I "believe". It's just another poorly worded attempt, by myself, to describe a fullness that  I can glimpse in my heart, and that when "all things" are seen through the fullness of Christ, then I can see that everything is fulfilled. He has made even the shadows beautiful, and has fulfilled all things. The only thing that I am stating as fact, is the answer to all questions, this one included, is CHRIST. If seen in His light, even those devestating and tragic physical and emotional events of the flesh, that we go through, can be seen as beautiful. Even the flesh can be seen as beautiful, because he has fulfilled it as well, and we can glimpse the purposes of it and see it through the eyes of His fullness. He has made all things beautiful!

We cringe and are repulsed when exposed to shadows, or there is an attempt to impose those shadows on us, but that is because we have been transformed into creatures of pure light, and there are no more shadows in our reality, and we want no part of them, but when glimpsed through the fullness of Christ, we can behold the beauty of it all!

I hope all will add to this, correct it, and discuss it. It's a subject that I find interesting, and it gives explanation to how beauty can be seen in the ugliest events in the world of shadows that we observe each day. All those sicknesses, diseases, deaths, and disapointments that we all experience in our day-to-day lives, can be seen as beautiful in the Fullness of Christ.

Love,

Hi, my friends!!!!

Wow, I have my own thread! It's great to see you all again. Thank each of you for your wonderful comments. I feel really special.

When I switched jobs a few years ago I didn't really have time to maintain any substantial dialogs other than just give a hit-and-run opinion here or there, so I gave up on trying to post.

Most of the time that I've visited The Shovel it's to read Jim's articles for inspiration but I do scan the Shack from time to time to make sure everyone's behaving themselves.

I hadn't seen this thread before though. It must have been a time when I tried to login because my Shoveletter subscription had canceled - so I registered with a new name thinking "vinnie" wasn't active anymore and I couldn't remember the dang password anyway.

Every thing's going great for me and I'm glad to see you all.

I'll pop in more often if you don't mind me not always being able to keep up with the replies.

Much love to all of you!

I just realized that the reason I hadn't seen this thread is because I always hit "active topics" when I browse the Shack and threads from "greetings" don't show up in the results.

Ha- Ha

Life's pretty routine which is a good thing I guess. I still fish and kayak when I get the chance, work a lot, and for some reason I started running a few years ago and decided to run a couple of marathons last year. We bought a house and it seems there's always something to do with it.

It's good to know that I've been missed. I had to get my old computer out of the garage so I could find my old google-eye gif so I could post again.

(BTW- My condolences to you, Jim and Sherri)

Much love to all of you!
