I don't have much time this am but was compelled to write about this. I remember thinking that the "goal" of the christian life was to be humbled as much as possible by God. Even humiliated. Life circumstances[bad ones..],freinds,boss',strangers whatever were there to "humble you". I have to wonder if we get that idea from the scripture that states "humble thyself in the sight of the Lord"...or even for "God oposes the proud but gives grace to the humble". That [if heard by the hearing aid of the flesh} sets us on a course of attempting to humble oneself[so we can be proud of being the "humble" ones who do God's "will"...unlike YOU!] But doesn't this just feul the flesh? Yes it does! It is a big game. A game of the world. See ANYONE unborn of God CAN do this. That is why are churches are so full. The kind of pride God shares through Paul and the rest of the apostles isn't[can't be] the same kind of pride we soppose. The pride he is referring to is one that earmarks those who are in and of the flesh. The ones who stand opposed to this loving Father and the reality of the grace in which we stand...not by works but by the gift of God.

I think the humble thyself comes from God, but has been manipulated by man into a negative, controlling thing. Humble thyself does not mean humiliate thyself.  I think of being humble as not judging others, especially if you have not placed yourself on the seat of judgement first before placing others there.  To be humble is to honestly look at oneself in the most raw form, throwing pride and selfishness aside, and allow understanding and love to come through.

Can you imagine if we all were a little bit more humble?  It might be kind of nice.

Gotta go to work.  Thanks for the post luvin, good food for thought, I can skip breakfast now.

Ah yes, Tracey, you are so right!

The religious perversion of God's miraculous work strikes again so that being humble has become something else. But fleshly attempts at humility can only reflect the reasoning of the flesh. Why would we expect anything else? For we have been there enough times to recognize the endless game, just as Adam has so well described.

True humility doesn't have to be announced. It doesn't even have to contain any form of the word "humble", nor does it need any Biblical references attached. However, the religious game of humility seems to thrive under the spotlight, using it to keep the competition going. The witness of true humility testifies to our hearts, for it confirms the truth within us that we can do nothing apart from Christ. Whereas the religious mind would shame us for our lack, the Spirit testifies that any lack only validates our true sufficiency in the God who is everything in us.

Great thoughts guys! As much as I recognize the issue of false humility and even forced humility[by others in religous systems that use peer pressure..and also from our own selves] I was also making the attempt to point out that I actually saw God as being in on the belief system as well. I saw Him as directing my own life and that of others[if they were willing] into more and more humiliating circumstances that would come across to others as "humiliating"[I will bring up a few specifics down below]. I saw His reasoning [as I reasoned in my own flesh] for this as some cruel and self directed diety that forced His "spiritual" lessons on me whether I liked it or not[in the name of making me "humble"]. Then if I didn't comply He would then say"you are out of the fold". My view of God was one of manipulation, as I just pointed out. I at the time, would analyze this thought process as I had time to reflect, and would seek council from other christians[and leaders..usually people I thought knew more than me] to see why I had this seemingly false picture of God I could not escape. You know what happened? I got people upset by me implying anything about it at all. I was apparently showing the end result of what THEY themselves were adhering to and that made them uncomfortable. Or I would get a blank reaction altogether. Or just more of the same.................................

As much as I wanted someone to step in and give me an answer to this delima in the midst of the thinking process...I never got that. What I got was no answer and the end result was that I had to just put it on the back burner and learn NEW things that had/have begun to paint an absolutely new conclusion about God. When flat tires, health problems or money problems come my way now..I simply refuse to think God is behind it all in this way. I am choosing to see Him as behind it in the sense that He lives in ME...SO REALLY hE IS BEHIND me!! God knows all things and God lives in me. He never lies and is always true. God has not said He would "change all things according to His good pleasure" He said he would cause all things to work together for the good for us. If God is for me, then who can be against me? Not flat tires, health problems, financial problems..no because we are more than conquerors through Him who has become one in us! I have heard it said..well God put Jesus on the cross and had Him mocked all His life[troubles, humiliating, humbling circumstances]..because it was "God's will" to humble Him. Well that maybye true but that was God..and that was Jesus...for us,in action. He endured so that we did not have to endure it. At the same time God was one with Jesus...and God no more plotted the evil deeds that were thrust upon Him at that time then the wind or the air. God however[as I see it] caused this to perfect Jesus....even through the nastiness of the ones who belong to this earth. As well as the powers and principalities! He knew all things. He knows all things. Im ok with that for sure. Whatever comes..if HE deems His grace sufficient in me, then I am cool with that. If something comes He wants to jump in the physical realm and change I am cool with that too. I just accept now that He spoke much more about His presence and grace in us..then He did changing every single thing.

Ok this evolved! Hope it explains a bit more though.

Hello Adam! :)

I see it as all part of the same game. In order to make any of it work we would have to see God being in on it. After all, that is what makes the belief system seem so valid ... and frightening.

Exactly!! Dave, Sherri and I were speaking of this very thing when we were visiting. For we have not been brought into a new kind of Biblical or Christian superstition by which we have to try to figure out what God is doing behind the scenes. No, we have been set truly free so that we might simply live in freedom! :)

Love, Jim

Does God lead people into temptation?
Posted: Sep-10-03 << Previous Topic | Next Topic >>

Consider the fact that James was there with Jesus listening to all of this. So, when James wrote his letter it makes sense that you would expect a similar pattern. Do you remember how James jumped right into a discussion the "trials" that test faith? Guess what? Same word we translate "temptations" ... same word Jesus used in Matt. 6:13. Now, it is ONLY from the perspective of fallen man (the wisdom of the world) that these trials are connected to the source of evil. And that is why James went on to make the distinction between the OUTER trial from God and the INNER trial (or temptation) that has its source in evil.

For EVERYTHING brought by God is GOOD, because God is good and CANNOT supply anything other than that which is like Himself.

This would be the EXACT same distinction that was being made by Jesus as he CONTRASTED: NOT leading in, but delivering from. The wording may throw US off, but I would bet that the people picked up on it immediately. On every point they would be saying, "That's NOT what the leaders tell us!" For the false religion of man (as taught by the Pharisees) could only come to one conclusion as to the sad state of affairs in Israel: that God is the source of evil as well as good. Jesus claimed that God DELIVERS from evil (literally, "the evil ONE").

Is it any different with us? I don't think so. We have even officially categorized catastrophic events as "Acts of God". This didn't happen because we didn't know what else to call these tragedies, it is the natural conclusion God must be the cause of really bad stuff.

Consider these in view of Matt 6:13

John 17:15 - "I do not ask Thee to take them out of the world, but to keep them from the evil one."

1 Cor 10:13 - "No temptation has overtaken you but such as is common to man; and GOD IS FAITHFUL, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will provide the way of escape also, that you may be able to endure it."

Pretty cool, huh? Same truth. Kept in the realm of it, but delivered from it. As we are in the process of blaming God, we can know that it is the only logical conclusion we learned from the natural realm. And it is good to reflect on the truth that He is the source of ONLY good.

Love, Jim

Well said Jim! The truth is we CAN'T know why...and what happens all the time.[maybye sometimes] It is a relief to know we don't really even have to[required by God] know. The fact is we can rest in  his faith it is working good because we are of and in the Miraculous One.

I was also re-reading your "The Will of God" series.. I felt it tied into this subject as well. Christ is the will of God..not so much some supernatural-superspiritual-fleshly concept that comes from reading text here and there in the bible. God is working good out of things..and actually you wrote something in the will of god series that read something like: "if you are a slave and can gain your freedom..do so! If it's not a real option then be content."[speaking of the Corinth Chapter I think] I see God as working for good so that you can be free. Stay free, as you truly are.

I think that true humbleness is the fruit of His preeminence in one's heart and life. This  is also why many who are in bondage to religious fantasy try to display humbleness but it is a counterfeit, it's carnal and pride is definitely the motivator. While many may mistake  prominence with preeminence, the fruits testify to their differences.
