was thinking today while listening to a religious radio station how i seem to hear so much garbage from these preachers. i cant help but recognize the legalism and fire and brimstone stuff they preach. i was thankful for being able to recognize this junk but on the other hand i got kind of bummed i dont seem to feel the joy and life of Christ. its like i can see the darkness and hate it but cant celebrate in the light. whats going on here i wonder. any thoughts? love you guys.

Ricky!

I can relate, for there are many times I feel the same, my brother. This world can surely drag us down. The encouragement we receive from one another can often shake us out of it. Let's see him work this out together. :)

Love, Jim

I the past i've been a very insecure Christian, which
i've seen a lot of growth in that area over the last
3-4 years....But at times like now I still find myself
back in some of the old struggles. However, Mary's
"Jesus is my life" and reading Psalms 43:2 and talking
with the Lord about these things has continued to help
me alot even though I am still in the struggle at
times. I do have confidence to just remember Jesus is
my life and the struggle will end...and I can have joy
each day even though I don't necessarily recognize it
as such.

Rick,

I'm free to listen to the good news corrupted, but I
would have to ask myself "why?". What did I expect to
hear? If I expected to hear something differently than
I do hear, then I can expect to feel disappointment.
What am I to make of it if what I hear on the station
is exactly what I expected to hear?

I keep listening to those Christian radio stations
too, hoping to hear something that will validate my
faith. Ever so often I do hear a nugget of truth that
does encourage me amongst all of the legalism that I
am free to let beat me up

Chuck Smith of Calvary Chapel admitted yesterday that
he had many struggles for years as a new believer
until he realized that he was complete in Christ.
That was encouraging for me.

Bill, thanks for your simple question as to Why. There is so much of the world's wisdom spewing forth from the pulpits that it cannot help but to affect us in one way or another. It carries the illusion of godliness because of the use of the Bible, the mention of God, Christ or the Spirit, among other elements such as abstaining from evil, etc. But the message of death and condemnation cannot truly encourage our hearts.

SO TRUE!! I finally learned that lesson and stopped listening a while back. It is so freeing. While I kept expecting to hear something different other than death, it was very disappointing and frustrating. When I finally accepted the fact that I would keep getting the same slop if I kept returning to the same PIG trough, I stopped going.

But on a side note, I can relate to what Rick says. But can't we all? I have come to expect that this is just how it is...I am not lacking anything because I don't feel joyous all the time.  And isn't that the most frustrating of all.?? It is not the "not feeling joy" that gets us...it is the "what's wrong with me, what is lacking in me - am I not SUPPOSED to feel joyous" Ah, and, hell, it just feels better to feel joyous.... I am waiting for my joy to come back around now..it ebbs and flows.

Yeah..it seems like it is actually the acknowledgment
of this very thing that restores some sort of joy.

yea, i get what your saying bill. thankyou. i dont know tho if im listening expecting to hear good news or just listening so i can reconfirm that i dont buy it and knew there would be b.s. just so i can keep convincing myself that i get it but not getting or seeing the light side more often. does that make sense? i guess if i spend my time looking for the world view, thats exactly what ill get even if i dont agree with it. maybe its a cynical way of trying to see life. like peeling an orange and focusing on how useless the peels are. rick.

Rick, my brother

It encourages my heart just to see your photo pop up in the mix of posts. You and I have to schedule an afternoon or evening very soon! :)

Bill,i might have to print this one out.It reminds me of this quote: "Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results." The same could apply to those sunday mornings when i flip through the channels looking for one of the church shows thinking "maybe, one of them will be sharing something that might be life giving".Or in my quest for a brick and mortar church thinking "maybe they will suddenly have revelation from God and see what real life and peace in Christ is and begin to share that truth once and for all".The reality though is I have no control over those arenas other than knowing they flow from what seems to be a different source than I am seeking. What I can see and know is the reality of what Christ has already done in my heart.

Yeah,

Dave I can remember thinking this very same type of
thing in all kinds of various situations just hoping
that somehow they would just 'wake up' and would
suddenly embrace what is true. The thing about it
is, is that it is truly a God thing for anyone to
believe AND to GO ON to believe. It is like it is
happening right under our noses.

Enjoyed what everyone has shared here.

I just think that we have "bought" into a false expectation of feeling joy when Christ as our life is our joy. Feelings just come and go as part of life. And listening to religion or the law would definitely elicit the opposite of joy.

Reading here at the shovel is always joyful as Christ as our life is the focus.

Still hope to sit down and listen to some of the audios soon.
That's great that Jim & Adam are doing this.
It will be fun to hear your voices.

I haven't read all the responses but I must say that I can totally understand where you coming from Rick.  And at times I find myself feeling really angry about what people preach because of the destruction it causes in people lives.  Plus, it's so easy to get pulled right back into that mindset and I don't need any more stumbling blocks or more death being ministered.  It's hard enough to combat the bogus stuff we hear on a regular day basis.
