Lately, I've been paying particular attention to the messages on I.C. signs, you know the ones they put out by the highways. Anyways, I've noticed a few lately that had pure truth in them, that I am 99.4% sure would mean something entirely different to the pastor(s) & congregations of these I.C's. Here is a sample:

(2) from Baptist churches:

"We are saved by Christ's dying, not our doing"

"If Christ has made you free, you are free indeed"

From the local Lutheran church:

"Have you heard the good news?"

Anyways, just thought I'd share those. Have any of you ever read any "good news" from an I.C. church sign, even if the I.C. that put the sign up, has a different meaning to what it says?

Oh heck, while I'm at it, I may as well share some of the more whacky things I've read on these same churches signs.  100% true, I've seen every one of these in my local area:

"Get right or get left"

"Heaven or Hell, your choice"

"You can't walk with God if you're running with the devil"

"Stop, drop, & roll won't work in Hell"

"Give God what's right, not what's left"

"Do your best & let God do the rest"

Hi Jason,  I'm starting to see or notice more of those ic signs in front of churches in my city lately also. Some of them really make me cringe.  I wonder really, what the non-religious think of the sayings on the signs and of trying to be drawn in by mostly guilt or part-truths.  Just another way for the ic to do their evangelizing I suppose.

Hello Jason!  Haven't seen ya for a while.  Hope all is well.  Missed you.

Meant to let you know, too how much I was enjoying your 'signs' and 'marquees' that you were posting here and there for a while.  They were fun!  : )

Jim and I always enjoy looking for and reading those billboards, etc. while we are traveling.  They can be good topic and conversation starters!  : )

There are 'churches' all over the place around here!  And they almost all have some kind of sign, logo, and saying out front!  Sometimes I am pleasantly surprised, but most times disappointed.  And when I am pleasantly surprised, I can not 'trust' that they mean how I am taking it, ... just like you metioned at the beginning of this thread.

If my brain allows me to remember any, I will get back and post them.  In the mean time, I am enjoying what the rest of you share!  : )

Dignz,

Thanks for the kind words. I've been working in a manufacturing plant for the last couple of weeks, & have had neither internet access nor any spare time. That's the reason for my being MIA.

Another church sign that I just remembered can be seen in a cow pasture in AL on I-65 headed north, somewhere south of Montgomery, IIRC. I don't know what church it is affiliated with, but it says "Go to church, or the devil will get you". It has been there for at least 25 years, because I remember always seeing it on the way home from my childhood vacations with my parents to Florida.

Imagine how that sign made me feel when I was a little kid, with my sister (2 years my elder) already having been "saved" & baptised, & me wondering "well, what about me?" My sister loved going to church, so I "knew" she was "saved" & "going to heaven", but what about me?.......I never really enjoyed going to church, even from a young age, so obviously the devil was going to get me.  Anyhow, on my most recent trip down that way a few years ago, I noticed that lovely (not) sign is still there. Someone makes sure it gets a fresh coat of paint every year or so. Nothing breathes life into the world like "Go to church, or the devil will get you".

I think America is a place where these whacky slogans are common place. we just don't have them here in the UK as we are culturally different; 'private religion and healthy cynicism' as one American chum pointed once to me.I'd say there was truth in that. Usingthe examples of what Jason put up below, i'd say this could be seen as having political overtones just to help the American voter and churcher goer vote the 'right' way -forgive my 'healthy cynicism'

Give God what's right, not what's left"

"Get right or get left"

My Dad had one... "God is never in a hurry, but always on time."  I kind of liked that one.  He also though put on the sign thing in front of the church...   "CH    CH  What is missing?   UR"   I thought at the time as a child that was kind of cute too.  However... with the present perspective it would seem that first of all, there was an implication that "church" was somehow in the building beside the sign and also that there could actually be someone missing from the body of Christ.  I know now that there is no one missing.  It is just God's working and timing in it all.  As evidenced here too,  we can be thousands of miles apart and still be "together".... none of us are "missing".

I saw a church sign the other day that said "Have you made God smile today?"  Thank God that is also fulfilled by our Father in Christ Jesus.

Note how the church sign quotations (even the ones that sound sound are based on people doing the initiating, i.e., the precious, majestic, ever-initiating life of Christ is not the subject of the quotations.

"What's missing from these signs?" Christ.

Gregg,

That is the bottom line reality, isn't it, and the very same that's missing from all our insane reasonings?

Jason,

We haven't heard from you in a while. What's been going on with you? I miss you and your input. :)

gregg, it was wonderful meeting you when we did and spending the day on 'the farm' and in the mountains, and then meeting and spending time with your lovely 'prism'!

meeting together is always a very special thing.  mcdave said something not too long ago about how meeting each other in the body is more like a reunion than a 'meeting for the first time' kind of thing.  i LOVED that!

"I saw a church sign the other day that said "Have you made God smile today?"  Thank God that is also fulfilled by our Father in Christ Jesus.  Evelina"

cheers to that, E!  we are the new creation and it is GOOD!    we are always pleasing in his sight.  he has made us so.

I saw this sign on two churches around town, and both used the same wrong word. As an editor, it drove me crazy, but it elicited quite a few chuckles among my friends.

They said: Exposure to the sun prevents burning!

And I absolutely despise this "God" billboard: What part of "Thou shalt not. . ." didn't you understand?

Ugh!
